ORWELL'S  1984

What if there are no humans on Earth? What if there is a collapse in human civilization? What would the world look like?

Inspired by the dystopian fiction called 1984, where the society in the future is vast disparity, and inherent weaknesses, keeping the humans in a state of conflict and unhappiness. Also, drawing attention to the climate dystopia, the silhouettes of balloons and exaggerated peplums are rendered to convey the extreme climate-related factors of the Earth such that the cracked panels using vinyl material have highlighted global warming, and deforestation causing water shortages.

Vinyl banners are printed every year and thrown away after the event or a promotional period, and eventually turned into waste, or at times some people reuse those as temporary shop roofs. When our online orders are delivered, they are mostly encased in bubble wraps for safety causes, which are also ended up thrown away as waste. Leftover fabrics and materials from previous fashion design projects are also reused.

Therefore, we have incorporated these thoughts into our concept and materials to highlight sustainability.

Our Eco Thoughts:

With our design details and silhouettes, we have addressed environmental issue in global scale, symbolizing the extreme temperatures and climate changes caused by humans, such as over-consumerism. We have embodied our intentions by upcycling the vinyl banners which we received from a relative’s business in Myanmar, and reusing bubbles wraps and wrapping plastic collected from our school, Raffles College of Higher Education that has been relocated. Moreover with leftover fabrics, materials, and even broken garment bags have been reused in this outfit from previous projects. Finally, we made padding out of fabric scraps. From this campaign, we can highlight sustainability and repurpose unconventional materials to create fashion. Last but not least, we hope that our design can influence people to become more conscious of the dystopian world that we are creating.

This mini collection was created and submitted for Lendlease Singapore's "Y.W.B.I.T (You Won't Believe It's Trash) Trash to Couture" Fashion Design Contest and was participated with my team partner, Ms. Feliony Faustine (@felionyfaustine). It was a gratification to collaborate with her and I believe we have brought together with a couture sense with trash in sustainability.
